  • Author: Ava
  • Total Time: 55 minutes
  • Yield: 8 turnovers 1x

Description

These Apple Pie Puff Pastry Turnovers are a delightful and quick way to enjoy the classic flavors of apple pie without the long baking time. With a flaky crust and tender, spiced apple filling, they are perfect for any occasion.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 sheets of store-bought frozen puff pastry
  • 45 Granny Smith apples
  • 23 Honeycrisp, Gala, or Fuji apples
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • Pinch of nutmeg
  • 1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice
  • 2 tablespoons melted butter
  • 1 beaten egg (for egg wash)
  • Splash of water or milk (for egg wash)
  • Coarse sugar (optional, for sprinkling)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Apple Filling: Peel, core, and dice the apples into small, uniform pieces. In a medium bowl, combine the diced apples with the granulated sugar, ground cinnamon, nutmeg, lemon juice, and melted butter. Toss until well coated and let cool.
  2. Thaw and Prepare Puff Pastry: Retrieve the puff pastry sheets from the refrigerator and unfold them on a lightly floured surface. Roll out each sheet to a slightly larger rectangle, about 10×12 inches.
  3. Cut the Pastry: Cut each pastry sheet into four equal squares.
  4. Fill the Turnovers: Spoon about 1/4 to 1/3 cup of the apple filling onto one half of each pastry square, leaving a small border around the edges.
  5. Fold and Crimp: Brush the edges of the pastry square with egg wash, fold over the filling to create a triangle, and press down to seal. Crimp the edges with a fork.
  6. Vent and Egg Wash: Place the turnovers on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper, make 2-3 small slits on top for steam to escape, and brush with egg wash. Sprinkle with coarse sugar if desired.
  7. Bake: Preheat the oven to 400°F (200°C) and bake the turnovers for 20-25 minutes until golden brown.
  8. Cool: Transfer the baked turnovers to a wire rack to cool slightly.
  9. Optional Glaze: Whisk together powdered sugar with milk or cream and a splash of vanilla extract, then drizzle over cooled turnovers before serving.

Keywords: Keep your pastry cold for the best results. Don't overfill the turnovers to prevent leaks, and ensure a good seal by crimping the edges well. You can add dried cranberries or nuts for extra texture.
