Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 ½ cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 ½ teaspoons baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 ½ cups granulated sugar
  • 1 cup brown sugar, packed
  • 4 large eggs
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 1 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips
  • ½ cup unsalted butter, softened
  • ¾ cup brown sugar, packed
  • ¼ cup granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup mini chocolate chips
  • 2 tablespoons milk
  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 4 cups powdered sugar
  • ¼ cup cocoa powder
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 24 tablespoons heavy cream (as needed for consistency)
  • Extra mini chocolate chips
  • Chocolate drizzle (optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour three 9-inch round cake pans.
  2. In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt. Set aside.
  3. In a large mixing bowl, cream together the softened butter, granulated sugar, and brown sugar using an electric mixer on medium speed until light and fluffy (about 3-4 minutes).
  4. Add the eggs one at a time, mixing well after each addition. Stir in the vanilla extract.
  5. Alternate adding the dry ingredient mixture and the buttermilk to the butter mixture, starting with a third of the dry ingredients, mixing until just combined, then adding half of the buttermilk. Repeat, ending with the dry ingredients. Avoid overmixing.
  6. Gently fold in the chocolate chips with a spatula.
  7. Divide the batter evenly among the three prepared cake pans and smooth the tops.
  8. Bake in the preheated oven for 25-30 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
  9. Remove the cakes from the oven and let them cool in the pans for about 10 minutes. Then, turn them out onto wire racks to cool completely.
  10. In a medium bowl, beat together the softened butter, brown sugar, and granulated sugar until creamy (about 2-3 minutes).
  11. Add the vanilla extract and mix until combined.
  12. Gradually add the flour, mixing until just combined.
  13. Fold in the mini chocolate chips and add the milk, mixing until the dough is smooth and slightly sticky.
  14. Set the cookie dough filling aside, or refrigerate for 15-20 minutes to make it easier to handle.

Notes

  • Ensure all ingredients are at room temperature for the best results.
