Ingredients
Scale
- 2 medium-sized apples (preferably Granny Smith)
- 1 cup all-purpose flour
- 1 tablespoon baking powder
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg (optional)
- 1/4 cup granulated sugar
- 1/2 cup milk (whole or 2%)
- 1 large egg
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1/4 cup unsalted butter, melted
- Vegetable oil (for frying)
- 1 cup powdered sugar (for the glaze)
- 2 tablespoons milk (for the glaze)
- 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon (for the glaze)
Instructions
- Wash the apples thoroughly under cold water.
- Core and peel the apples, then chop them into small, bite-sized pieces (about 1/4-inch cubes).
- Toss the chopped apples with 1 tablespoon of granulated sugar and 1 teaspoon of ground cinnamon in a medium bowl. Set aside.
- In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour, baking powder, salt, 1/4 cup granulated sugar, 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon, and nutmeg (if using). Whisk until well combined.
- In a separate bowl, whisk together the milk, egg, vanilla extract, and melted butter until smooth.
- Pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients and gently fold together. It’s okay if there are a few lumps.
- Fold in the prepared apple mixture until evenly distributed.
- In a deep skillet or heavy-bottomed pot, heat vegetable oil to a depth of about 2 inches over medium heat until it reaches 350°F (175°C).
- Drop spoonfuls of the batter into the hot oil, frying about 4-5 fritter bites at a time.
- Fry for 2-3 minutes on each side until golden brown and puffed up. Use a slotted spoon to flip them halfway through.
- Remove cooked fritters and place them on a plate lined with paper towels to drain excess oil. Repeat with remaining batter.
- In a medium bowl, whisk together the powdered sugar, 2 tablespoons of milk, and 1 teaspoon of ground cinnamon until smooth. Adjust consistency with more milk or powdered sugar as needed.
- Once fritters have cooled for about 5 minutes, dip them into the glaze or drizzle it over the top.
- Allow the glaze to set for a few minutes before serving.
Notes
- For a richer flavor, consider using a mix of different apple varieties.
- Ensure the oil is at the right temperature to avoid greasy fritters.
- These fritters are best enjoyed fresh but can be stored in an airtight container for a day or two.
